  • Check out the current issue of the Alumni Magazine.

Three separate full-page ads encouraging people to "Vox the Vote".

All for an election in which alumni are given no choice in candidates.

In protest to this process, I shall sign and return my ballot (and thus be counted as a voter) yet not vote for any candidate (regardless of their qualifications). This seems better than an apathetic not bothering to vote at all.

  • No one got on the ball this time, but there's plenty of time to organize a competing slate for the next election. I don't see that as a reason to "protest." [Insert hyperbolic political dictatorship metaphor here]

  • I submitted my blank ballot. It's a shame it had to come to this. Alumni don't matter any more. Just look at how dead this website has become. Nobody cares.

  • I care a great deal and I wish that there was some way to respond to the daily attacks on the College by Joe Ash. If nothing else, he has strengthened the resolve of the alumni body to stand firm.

  • John,

If you took the time to speak to members of the faculty and many students, you would understand how unpopular President Kim is. It astounds me how many alumni reflexively support the administration, no matter how few its achievements, how frequents its gaffes, how extensive its waste, and how slanted its PR.

If you have counter-arguments to my posts on Dartblog that contain actual information (statistics, other data, links to authoritative web sites), I would be happy to put them up as addenda. However, if you simply assert that the facts that I adduce on Dartblog are "attacks," then you'll have to limit your arguments to this site, and its dozen or so readers.

    Joe Asch

  • "daily attacks on the College by Joe Ash (sic)".

Like his praise of Dartmouth for taking in BU and Brown students who can no longer study in Japan. That one was unconscionable!

By Blogger John, at 3/24/2011 8:16 PM

  • John - If you didn't want to hear from Joe Asch ever again, you should have elected him to the Board of Trustees.

By Blogger Harry, at 3/25/2011 8:34 AM

  • "I should have elected" Joe Asch? Sorry, but that was not within my power.

Just to be clear, I kind of like Joe's blogging. Don't always agree with him, but it's great to have another perspective about what's going on in Hanover besides College PR. And my point, in the previous comment, is that he doesn't always "attack" the college, contrary to what people like John Fitzpatrick seem to think.

  • Joe Asch's inflammatory and often insulting Dartblog posts used to bother me too, especially coming from his vantage point in Paris. They don't any more. His anti-Kim administration bias is so transparent that I have come to believe it is far better for all concerned if he airs his views, even if he will not tolerate any dissenting voices on his blog. Alumni/ae are perfectly capable of forming their own opinions about the reliability and integrity of his posts. As for the notion that Joe should have been elected to the Board of Trustees, the fact is that he wasn't. His Dartblog posts, in my view, vindicate the judgment of those who voted for someone else and often look like undisguised sour grapes.

There are actually some alumni/ae who have current direct in-depth personal experience with Dartmouth, President Kim, his administration, the faculty, and the student body and who believe that Dartmouth has never been better. I am one of them. Based upon the information and experience I have, I choose to be part of an effort to promote Dartmouth and the Kim administration as an alum and parent. Joe does not. There you have it.

We should not fear or slap down the expressed opinions of our fellow alumni/ae. They help us to understand one another better and to make informed judgments when and if the time for action of some sort arrives. They also help us to enjoy the meaningful and real collegiality an alumni/ae body should have.

Joe Asch and I could not disagree more about Dartmouth. Still, he obviously cares a lot, and that is good enough for me. His voice is just as important, but no more important, than the voice of any other alum. I wish him well.

  • Three weeks into the voting period and the turnout is 9%. With the usual last day surge and the inclusion of the paper ballots, the final turnout will likely be around 20%. This isn't much of an election, is it? I assume the plan is to eventually do away with elections all together.

  • We should not fear or slap down the expressed opinions of our fellow alumni/ae.... His voice is just as important, but no more important, than the voice of any other alum.

That must be a major admission for you, considering what you've said about him before.

Joe also goes into a lot more detail than simply saying the opposite of "I believe Dartmouth has never been better."

  • Hey, don't take my word (or data) for it. Have a look at today's D. The D's columnist expresses what a great many students, faculty and staff angrily believe.

By Blogger Joseph, at 3/28/2011 8:53 AM

  • Other than one email from the Gail/Bill Campaign, I've gotten nothing from the College about the election. How come?

By Blogger DartBored, at 4/06/2011 6:57 PM

  • Does anyone know who won the election?

By Blogger DartBored, at 4/09/2011 10:31 AM

  • The turnout was less than I thought - only 15%. And the winners got only 85% of the vote even though they were unopposed. What I joke.
